Migraines and

Liver Disharmony

BY

Sarah Judith Cole

It is entirely possible to get rid of Migraines for good. I know I had them from a small child, and I used to get several a month. I haven't had one in years.

From a traditional Chinese point of view, Migraines are part of a liver disharmony pattern--specifically Liver yang rising, and also stagnant liver chi.

In Chinese medicine the liver functions are:

1. stores blood

2. liver rules flowing and spreading

3. Maintains free-coursing of chi

4. Governs muscles, tendons, ligaments

5. responsible for bile secretion

6. Promotes the functions of all organs, primarily

stomach and spleen

7. influences emotional balance

8. in involved with the ability to sort and plan

9. the liver expresses through the fingernails and toenails

10. Opens to the eyes.

As we all know from a western point of view the liver is responsible for 1000's of things. Virtually everything that comes into and onto your body goes through the liver. The liver is also important in the free-flowing, in movement, of our bodies, our emotions, our ability to be mentally concise, plan and with it's companion organ the gallbladder, carry out those plans, and the opening of our spirits to Joy. So the liver really works all the time. For some people there seems to be a "constitutional family weakness" of the liver that may contribute to having migraines. For others, sometimes life plays a big part.

The things we choose to participate in, such as alcohol and drugs, and also relationships can contribute to straining the liver. Whether it be unresolved childhood issues, current problems in life, or just unresolved anger, this tends to stop the free-flowing of the liver chi. The natural movement of liver chi is upwards, and sometimes it gets "stuck" in the upper part of the body. Some of the other symptoms of liver chi stagnation and yang rising are:

1. headaches

2. pain in the abdomen

3. swelling of the breasts

4. belching (I have seen chronic belchers, they were literally belching their anger out)

5. sighing

6. depression

7. anger without a cause

8. sounding and looking angry even when not-such as talking in a loud angry voice, the eyes look angry, the face may be red

9. feeling of having a lump in the throat

10.menstrual difficulties, PMS, etc

11.lumps in the body including uterine, and breast fibroids when the disharmony is more severe there may be the

further symptoms of:

1. bitter taste in the mouth

2. violent outbreaks

3. tinnitus

4. hearing problems

5. vision problems

6. insomnia,

7. constipation

8. symptoms of premature aging such as graying of hair, dryness of the sinews and tissues of the body.

9. Many consider that cancer is part of a liver disharmony pattern. Some consider cancer to be extreme rage congealed in one place

As you can see from the above, liver disharmonies can be part of alot of health and emotional problems. Because of our modern way of life, we have so many stresses that strain the liver energy. To one degree or another we all have some liver disharmony. For migraine sufferers who cares what started the disharmony lets just find a way to get rid of the pain. There is a way to get rid of the pain naturally.

1 The Essential Oil blend M-grain plays a very important part. Some people use it on a daily basis, whether they have a Migraine or not. I agree with this.Application would be to the temples and back of the neck. In Chinese medicine when someone comes to us with a migraine, it is where there is too much energy in the top of the head, (caused from the liver disharmony). The first thing we want to do is bring that excess down and help to recirculate the energy. One of the ways we do this is by working the feet, either with massage, moxa, or needles. You can do this yourself easily.

Apply the Essential oil Blend Valor first to the feet being sure to get it behind the back of the big toe, then apply M-grain the same way.

for Migraine sufferers, I recommend finding a good massage therapist or someone who does shiatsu, or reflexology and getting this done at least once or twice, so then you can begin to do it for yourself and know how it feels. If you can afford to, go back for more. Also when massaging your feet be sure and massage the liver vitaflex area well. Also on the top of the big toes, (on the vitaflex chart this is the brain area and also above the brain area and above the nail) press on this area quite strongly several times. If you have a headache, you may be surprised at how just doing this alone will help. It will probably be tender on everyone, because almost all of us have too much energy in the top of our bodies. Another area is on the top of the foot, bring your finger in between the big toe and the toe next to it and come up towards the ankle running your finger between the bones. Where your finger meets the bones coming together is a point.(this is called Liver 3 if you have an acupuncture chart) Press in on this, it will probably be tender on about everyone. This is a good place to also apply M-grain and also Juvaflex.

2. I recommend using the blends of Valor, M-Grain, Juvaflex, Release and Acceptance. Alternate putting Juvaflex on the feet one time, and Release on the liver itself , then adding in acceptance

Occassionally, go back and forth with these blends, alternating putting on feet then liver.

3. Cleansing the liver is very important as is cleansing the whole body. Juvaflex is a good start, but I also recommend Juvatone, as well as the cleansing trio. As mentioned above the liver has an impact on the muscles and sinews of the body. Sulferzyme will help to nourish this aspect. Also Powermeal and or Vitagreen would be good

Of course, if someone came to me with this problem there would be other things addressed, because the body and the body's energies are a whole, and where there is disharmony in one area it is creating a disharmony elsewhere as well. For instance, where there is an excess there is somewhere else a deficiency.

In the case of liver chi stagnation and liver yang rising there would also be some liver yin deficiency. The above oils and supplements address this aspect as well, without you having to come to me, or overloading you with far more information than you want. The Vitagreen and Sulferzyme supplements will help to nourish the yin, and the Powermeal will help to bring Chi to the whole body. All this would begin to relieve symptoms and bring the body into balance.

Dr. Young found in testing that when people had migraines, the frequencies of the left and right brain lobes were off. When M-grain was applied it brought the frequencies into balance. An excess of liver energy in the head would cause this inbalance of the frequencies in the brain.
