Understanding the Immune System And Keeping It Healthy

By Sarah Judith Cole, LMT, OBT

In today’s environment, the body is constantly constantly bombarded with toxins. From the air we Breathe, the water we drink, the foods we eat, the drugs we take, the amount of worry, and anxiety in our world, lack of sleep, overwork, our immune systems are stressed to the max. It is no wonder, that chronic disease is on the rise. In my practice, I find that clients in their 20's and 30's are no healthier than clients in their 40's and 50's. The Immune system plays a big part in keeping us strong, healthy and youthful. The Immune system, can become weak from all of the above.

The "Mononuclear Phagocyte System"destroys  worn out blood cells, bacteria, cancer cells and other foreign substances. Monocytes, formed in the bone marrow circulate in the blood stream throughout the body. In the tissues they become macrophages, also called "big eaters".

They can be found in the liver blood channels, the lungs, spleen, and lymph nodes. This system is nonspecific and along with the skin, and mucous membranes, body secretions such as tears, digestive juices, and the inflammatory response, acts as the bodies first line of defense. The Immune System is more specific. We are born with a certain amount of immunity we get from our mothers. If a child is breast fed, this immunity continues and often grows stronger. The mother passes on to the child, the immunity she has. As humans, there are many diseases that animal’s get that we don't. Some racial groups seem less inclined to some diseases than others. All this is called "inborn immunity".

Another aspect of the immune system is called "Acquired Immunity" This is immunity that develops throughout our lives. If a foreign substance invades our bodies, and sets up an immune reaction is called an antigen. Antigens stimulates the activity of specific white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are found in the lymphoid tissue and also in the blood stream. T-Lymphocytes become sensitized t specific antigens, and they destroy foreign cells directly, help regulate the immune system, and release substances that assist in destroying foreign cells.

B-Lymphocytes, when exposed to an antigen produce plasma cells, which in turn, produce antibodies. Antibodies destroy antigens. As we go through life, and are exposed to certain pathogens, we develop immunity against that pathogen. We also, acquire immunity from vaccines.

With all the stresses of life, pollution and new diseases cropping up, it is important to keep the immune system strong and vital. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day to help flush out the body is important. Getting proper rest at night, allowing the body to replenish itself is also important. Eating plenty of fresh and clean food helps. Using cosmetics and personal health care items free of toxins helps. "Decluttering" your life is important.

There are also ways to help support your body in staying healthy through the use of essential oils and supplements and also using essential oils in a cleansing program. Essential oils may stimulate immune function and regenerate damaged tissue. They also combat disease by killing viruses, bacteria, and other microbes, and pathogens. Essential oils penetrate cells, and flow throughout blood and tissues. They also stimulate production of antibodies, ( as well as neurotransmitters, endorphins, hormones and enzymes.) Research has shown that pathogens do not develop resistance to essential oils as they do to other products, such as antibiotics. Essential oils also increase the uptake of oxygen and ATP (adenosine Triphosphate), which fuels individual cells. Using dietary supplements that have essential oils in them, increases nutritional support, helping to strengthen the immune system. Essential Oils are also very high in anti-oxidant activity.

Along with pathogens, and toxins invading from the outside, it is important to keep the body toned up and cleansed out, so that the toxins from food, air we breathe, etc, can quickly pass through out bodies. Undigested debris from food, (particularly meat and dairy), release heavy metals, hormones, chemicals and toxins directly into the blood stream. It also ferments, and creates mycotoxins, which have been linked to many diseases. Because of their above abilities, using natural herbal cleansing products, enhanced by therapeutic grade essential oils, improves the quality of the cleanse. Fortifying the Immune System will enhance the quality of your life.

Essential Oils, Supplements, and Cleansing Products to Fortify the Immune System

Because of their many properties, almost all essential oils will boost the immune system, but there are several that are particularly effective.

Clove has one of the highest anti-oxidant activity of anything on the planet. It is also highly anti-microbial.

Frankincense is high in sesquiterpenes, and is very oxygenating to the brain. It also increases leukocyte activity in fighting infection.

While there are many more single essential oils that are wonderful for the immune system, there are also several oil blends that combine the qualities of these essential oils.

Immupower is a great blend for building, strengthening the body’s defense mechanisms. It contains the oils of Cistus, Frankincense, Oregano, Idaho Tansy, Cumin, Clove, Hyssop, Ravensara, and Mountain Savory. A great way to use it is to apply to the feet (3-4 drops each foot along with a few drops of V-6 mixing oil) on a daily basis. It smells wonderful and can also be diffused to clean the air.

Thieves oil blend was tested and found to have a 99.96% kill rate against airborne bacteria. The oils in this blend are highly anti-microbial, and help to protect the body against flu, colds, sinusitis, bronchitis, sore throats, etc. It contains the oils of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary. It is also great on the feet or diffused.
